Event Details

Next week’s Poverty Bay Blues Jam Night promises to be a special one. A tribute to Dave Galanin, fine artist, carver and blues musician known as Strummin Dog, foundation member of the Poverty Bay Blues Club and fine human remembered dearly by many here in Gisborne.
Dave had first traveled from his native home of Alaska to Aotearoa, New Zealand for one of the first of a number of wānanga between Toihoukura and other indigenous artists from around the world, organised by Sandy Adsett, which still continue today.
Finding something special here in the Tairāwhiti, Dave returned to live here with his wife and daughter for four years, and it was during that time that he became heavily involved in the establishment of the Blues Club. Since returning to Alaska he has continued his strong association with Gisborne and its arts and music communities, with many a jam session being held over zoom in that time.
After Dave passed away in December of last year the Blues Club mooted that a memorial concert for Strummin Dog be held each year in tribute to his contribution to our Blues community as well as his music.
Dave’s wife is travelling from Alaska for next Tuesday’s Poverty Bay Blues Club Memorial Concert, which will be followed by a Tribute Exhibition at Toi Ake Gallery in Ballance Street in memory of his contribution to the arts.
At the concert a video of montage of Strummin Dog performances will screen from 7:30pm and local artists will pay tribute from 8pm onwards. Doors open at 7pm at the Dome.
Bar opens at 7pm and music starts at 8pm.
$5 door charge or free to Poverty Bay Blues Inc members and participating musicians.
