Event Details

Anna Tolich, Cheyenne Ballantine, & Mark Curr discuss the approach and philosophy of the Neighbourhood Play System Model.
Over the past two years, Sport New Zealand and Arup have been working alongside regional partners to develop the Neighbourhood Play System Model (NPS). The NPS explores a more sustainable approach to developing and managing the conditions for quality play within a defined footprint with the purpose of growing play at the neighbourhood level through co-designed projects that unite residents to create a ‘child-friendly community’. Success for this work is defined by the increased understanding and promotion of play as an everywhere activity – not just something for schools or playgrounds. It offers a string of interventions and improvements that create the space, time, and permission for play for tamariki and whānau.
This approach has been piloted and tested in 6 NZ communities with a focus on high deprivation areas. Project leads have immersed themselves into communities to understand current conditions for play that lead to opportunities for communities to grow play. This kōrero will share the journey of bringing local solutions to the challenges of growing play with a focus on the communities of East Gore and Elgin (Gisborne). Join this Kai-time Kōrero to learn about the NPS approach, philosophies, and ambitions for existing and future projects.
