This year’s theme is Matariki hunga nui | Matariki of many people with a focus on telling our stories and working together.
Please think creatively, any artistic medium goes. Within reason!
Space is limited, so we would love to hear what you are planning to allow us to allocate the appropriate space for your creations!
The exhibition will open on Saturday June 18 in conjunction with Matariki opening events and continue through the week of Matariki Celebrations and through to the winter school holidays to give whanau and friends a good opportunity to see the wondrous Matariki inspired creations. (Saturday 18 June – Saturday 23 July 2022).

Ko Matariki te whetu hei arataki e – Let Matariki guide the way” – Tuini Ngawai
Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival is proud to celebrate the season of Matariki with the triumphant return of Te Ara i Whiti.
Te Ara i Whiti is an interactive visual arts experience primarily composed of illuminated installations and sculptural works that celebrate contemporary Māori design and connections to place. In 2022 we are proud to welcome back Melanie Tangaere Baldwin as guest curator with collaboration and support from globally acclaimed artist, Angus Muir.
Now in its fourth year, Te Ara i Whiti has grown significantly in scale and intent, with a diverse range of artistic disciplines and styles breathing life into sculptural wonder and play. This installation celebrates our regional connection to light and the creative abundance of Te Tairāwhiti.
As the winter nights grow darker, our artists illuminate the banks of the Taruheru once more with surprise and delight for all the whānau.
Bundle up the whānau and come down in the evenings to enjoy live music, kai carts, and exciting art installations!

Eastern Whio Link has teamed up with Tauawhi Men’s Centre Gisborne to bring you a fishing contest with a difference.
On Labour Weekend- 22-24th October we will be hosting a fishing contest in the upper Waioeka for Eastern Whio Link volunteers, Dads and their kids.
S.A.M’s stands for Significant Adult Male and this event is focussed around Dads and other significant adult male figures getting out fishing with their kids. Fishing has always been a great multi-generational past time and Eastern Whio Link is creating the opportunity for people to learn how to fish with their kids. In the novice section we will have guides on hand to share their best fishing spots and share their fishing tips and tricks. We will have fishing rods to borrow and we can help organise fishing licences for you. The Open division will be open to all Eastern Whio Link volunteers with incredible prizes on offer for both divisions.
The rules:- The fishing area is the Waioeka Catchment.- The event is spin fishing only.- Contestants can submit a maximum of two fish across the three-day event. One rainbow and one brown. – Those entering the open division are expected to guide for the novice division for at least one day of the event.- Judges decision is final.-There will be prizes for best photo, most unusual fish and other unique factors of fishing. If you would like to enter this event or support it in any way please get in touch we would like to hear from you.
