Event Details

The Raupō Housing Act 1842, a striking example of the divisive legislations inacted by the newly formed colonial government, was New Zealand’s (intentional choice of ingoa NZ) first building regulation. Forcing sovereign Tangata Whenua into participating within the introduced tax system.
We welcome you all to Kokiri Kai, 43 Ranfurly St Kaiti, from 9am on Tangaroa o Mahuru (Friday 1st Oct), to share thoughts and perspective as we build and thatch a Raupō Pataka Kai. Our Pataka Kai is to be displayed at the NOise Vacancy Exibition during the Tairāwhiti Arts Festival, a statement sharing insight into the whakapapa of our current housing crisis. Local legend Panapa Ehau will be sharing his mohio/maramatanga of raupō thatching, as we continue the discussion surrounding community-lead social development and impacts around housing and food resilience. Our favourite Persian uncle Adel Salmanzadeh will be filling our puku with his masterpiece cuisine in the early evening. All welcome, nau mai haere mai motuhake mai
