13nov9:00 am3:00 pmExploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi with Thelma Karaitiana & Jane Luiten

Event Details

The treaty signed first at Waitangi in February 1840 is commonly regarded as the constitutional foundation of New Zealand as we know it. So embedded are presumptions surrounding the document, the Waitangi Tribunal’s landmark conclusion in 2014 that the political arrangement with Great Britain in 1840 did not amount to a cession of sovereignty scarcely caused a ripple.
If not sovereignty, then what? Ever wondered about the promise of Te Tiriti for New Zealanders at the time? Ever pondered the puzzle of how ‘kawanatanga katoa’ and ‘te tino rangatiratanga’ were to co-exist? Ever considered Te Tiriti in the local context of Tūranganui a Kiwa?
Ngai Tāwhiri educationist Thelma Karaitiana and treaty historian Jane Luiten team up to offer a workshop exploring the historical context of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, providing fresh perspectives which support age-old aspirations of hapū mana.
Cost: $75.
All-day workshop limited to 20 people.
