17aug1:00 pm3:00 pmCommunity Seminar - Coast & Dunes Restoration

Event Details

Community seminar & discussion with coastal specialist, Jim Dahm, about caring for our coast and dunes restoration.
Jim will share his knowledge and experience developed over 30 years of supporting communities to understand natural coastal processes, including the function of dunes and other natural buffers; guidelines for dune restoration and working with nature; examples of the use of dune restoration to restore biodiversity, enhance protection and manage coastal hazards; use of combined approaches where engineering is also required; and the reasons for the increased focus on working with nature as opposed to hard engineering.
Jim has been providing support for Wainui Coast Care and advice to GDC for many years, was responsible for initiating community-based coast care and dune restoration in Aotearoa, and a founding member of the Coastal Restoration Tahuna Ora Trust
He continues to be active throughout the country in the design and implementation of dunes restoration using indigenous species, and has a special affinity with Tairāwhiti and East Coast beaches, having spent his childhood in Ormond and now living in Thames.
