On Monday the 3 May, the Government is hosting a public meeting in Gisborne about freedom camping and its public consultation on how to make freedom camping in New Zealand more sustainable. There a four proposals for consultation: 
1. Make it mandatory for freedom camping in a vehicle to be done in a certified self-contained vehicle.
2. Make it mandatory for freedom campers to stay in a vehicle that is certified self-contained, unless they are staying at a site with toilet facilities (excluding public conservation lands and regional parks).
3. Improve the regulatory tools for government land managers. 
4. Strengthen the requirements for self-contained vehicles.The Government’s proposals align closely with Council’s recent consultation on its draft freedom camping bylaw. This public meeting will include a 20-30 minute presentation about the consultation and the discuss the four proposals in detail.
