On Monday the 3 May, the Government is hosting a public meeting in Gisborne about freedom camping and its public consultation on how to make freedom camping in New Zealand more sustainable. There a four proposals for consultation:
1. Make it mandatory for freedom camping in a vehicle to be done in a certified self-contained vehicle.
2. Make it mandatory for freedom campers to stay in a vehicle that is certified self-contained, unless they are staying at a site with toilet facilities (excluding public conservation lands and regional parks).
3. Improve the regulatory tools for government land managers.
4. Strengthen the requirements for self-contained vehicles.The Government’s proposals align closely with Council’s recent consultation on its draft freedom camping bylaw. Public meetings are being held across Aotearoa, including Gisborne, to discuss the proposals and answer any questions you may have. This public meeting will include a 20-30 minute presentation about the consultation and the discuss the four proposals in detail.
